Measuring for your custom curtains can be daunting but don't worry, we have created this page to help you measure for your curtains in 3 easy steps.
Before you start, make sure you do the following:- You are using a steel tape (the fabric ones tend to warp and stretch).
- You have chosen your fabric.
- You have chosen the type of curtain you want for your child's bedroom.
|
|
- STEP 1 - Where do you want your curtain to hang?
Do you want your curtain to hang inside the molding (also known as the window frame), on the molding or beyond the molding? follow the guidelines above to measure for each of these 3 options. |
- STEP 2- Measuring the WIDTH of your finished curtain?
Before you measure the width of your curtain, you need to chose between a curtain track, a curtain pole, or a curtain tension bar. Once you decide what you want your curtain to hang on, this is how your measure the width: Width of a tension bar: If you wish your curtain to hang inside the window frame, you would need to use a tension bar and need to measure the inside of the molding, both width and length (measure the inside width and length of your window frame). A tension bar is a spring loaded curtain rod that does not require any screws to hold it up. Width of a pole or track: If you wish your curtain to hang on the actual window box frame or beyond (the latter covers the entire window), you need to measure the width of your curtain track or pole as indicted in the picture below. This will be the width of your finished curtain. |
- STEP 3 - Measuring the LENGHT of your finished curtain
This is a 2 step process. First, deciding where your curtain would finish and second where it would start.
|
A) Where would your curtain finish? This is based on your personal preference and you need to decide where you want to curtain to finish. Would it finish at the window sill, just below the sill or is it a floor length curtain? For a sill length curtain It is advisable to finish the curtain 1.5 to 2 cm above the window sill. For a below the sill curtain Allow anywhere between 9 and 15 inches below the window sill. For a floor length curtain It is advisable to finish the curtain 2 cm above the floor. |
B) Where would your curtain start? This depends on the heading your chose and where your curtain would start in relation to your pole or track. Have a look at the pictures below for guidelines on how to measure.
