Before you read more about this fabulous party workshop, here is a summary of how it works:
- We come in half an hour before the workshop starts.
- We set up the workstations.
- The children spend 2 hours making a mosaic piece.
- We take the pieces back to our studio for grouting and polishing.
- We send them back to you 3 days later looking like true pieces of art.
This is a very popular birthday party workshop with both boys and girls. During the workshop children will learn the basics of construction and installation of this highly creative art form. They will then assemble a mosaic piece from start to finish in a design of their choice and take it home as a keepsake of a wonderful day.
The result of their creative expression is truly magnificent (the pictures show the process from start to finish and some wonderful pieces of Art made by children).
Mosaics is one of the oldest forms of artistic expression, it goes back to ancient Roman and Greek times. Mosaics are made by pressing small pieces of vitreous tiles, smalti, marble, pottery, ceramics, beads, and glass shapes into PVA glue. Once the glue dries, grouting is applied to the finished piece, grout is a cement like plaster which hardens around the tiles to make a wonderful and permanent work of art.
All mosaic tiles are pre-cut for the children to use. Additional pieces will be cut to shape with a pair of nippers on the day and throughout the workshop to assist the children in creating their piece. There is an option for older children to learn the art of cutting tiles according to the shape hey require, they will use child friendly nippers and protective goggles (this is optional and can be requested when booking the workshop).
Before we embark together on a magical creative journey, each child is given their own set of tiles and tools to work with. Each set contains:
- An artist apron to protect their clothes.
- A choice of mirror shapes, wooden mounting boards, or ceramic pots as a base for the mosaic project.
- Boxes of assorted colored and pre-cut vitreous tiles.
- Boxes of smalti, glass shapes, marbles, millefioroi and other lovely decorations.
- Material needed to complete the mosaic (such as tools, glues & grout).

Please note that we will collect all projects at the end of the day and take them to our Cool Mummy studio where they will be grouted and polished. Grouting is messy and needs hours to set and dry, which is why we chose to do it away from the children. We will then post a box containing all of the children's finished projects back to your home address within 72 hours of the party workshop. The children are always super excited to get their mosaics back looking polished and lovely.
